Letters from Sigmund Freud, 1920

Sigmund and Martha Freud were in Vienna when their daughter Sophie died from Spanish Flu in Hamburg. Travel was restricted and borders impassable, so letters were their only source of information and means of communication. Here, Freud writes to family and friends to break the news and reflect on his grief.

In June 1923, Sophie’s youngest son Heinele died of tuberculosis. Sigmund Freud was devastated by this loss and reflected on his grief over the subsequent years in letters to friends.
