The excavation of the cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum allowed Northern European visitors a glimpse of a pre-Christian era before the period of sexual renunciation. Evidence of a more liberal ancient Roman attitude to sexual expression included the discovery of wall paintings representing scenes of sexual intercourse and numerous phallic artefacts.
