Reproduction print of Oedipus and the Sphinx by Ingres
LFRD 6405
The painting of Oedipus and the Sphinx by Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres became a defining image for psychoanalysis. In his consulting room in Vienna, its reproduction hung over the couch, the very locus of the psychoanalytic cure. Versions of this image were reproduced on a medal given to Freud on his 50th birthday and on his personal bookplate. It was even used as the logo for the International Psychoanalytical publishing house.
